North Shore Surf Competitions 2023 – 2024 / The Ultimate Guide

Finals day at the Billabong Pipe Masters at Banzai Pipeline.

North Shore surf competitions are some of the most exciting sporting events in the world. That’s not an opinion. Ask anyone who’s been to one — they’re incredible.

Whether you’re an avid surfer or have never touched a surfboard, surf competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, are an amazing sight to see. Locals and visitors alike gather on the beach to watch the best surfers in the world pull into 20-foot barreling waves at the legendary Banzai Pipeline. The crowd holds their breath in unison, waiting to see if the surfer is going to make it out the other side, and cheers erupt as the pro spits out of the wave unscathed.

There are lots of things to do on the North Shore, but if you find yourself in the area during wintertime, do yourself a favor and go see a North Shore surf competition. And check out our Guide to North Shore Oahu for our recommendations on the best restaurants, shops, and things to do on the North Shore.

North Shore Surf Competitions 2023 – 2024

north shore surf competition
Just another beautiful day with amazing waves on the North Shore.

In the winter months between November and March, huge swells bless the North Shore of Oahu with some of the best waves in the world. Said waves attract the best surfers in the world and serve as a stage for some of the most exciting surf competitions in existence.

Surf competitions work a bit differently than your typical sporting event because organizers are at the mercy of the waves, so below we explain how surf competitions work. Below that, we’ve compiled a list of the top surf competitions on the North Shore and all the dates and details for the 2023 – 2024 winter season.

COVID-19 Updates & Effects:

When Coronavirus hit in 2020, there were major effects on professional surfing and World Surf League events. Most of the 2020 season events were canceled altogether, and the new schedules for 2021 and 2022 were completely overhauled – including the event schedules for the North Shore.

Prior to Covid, the schedule for North Shore surf competitions had been roughly the same for a long time – with the same legacy events happening around the same dates year after year. Legendary events like the Vans Triple Crown series and Billabong Pipe Masters were consistently slotted for the same dates every year.

Because of the Covid shake-up, there have been tons of event changes – the biggest of which is that in 2020, the Vans Triple Crown (which was an epic multi-event series) was reintroduced as a ‘digital competition series’ so it will be only be held online for the foreseeable future 🙁 .

Pre-COVID, the major North Shore surf competitions were held at the end of the competitive surf season (in November and December) and the events contributed toward determining who won the Championship Tour (CT), and which surfers from the Qualifying Series (QS) would qualify for the CT the following year. After Coronavirus, everything has shifted.

Currently, instead of North Shore surf competitions ending the CT tour schedule and season, they will now be the start to the Championship Tour schedule (in January and February).

There are still great surf events in November and December – they just aren’t Championship Tour events or the same schedule as the legacy events of the past. That said, all types of event shifts are still rumored to change, so events and schedules are still in flux.

To simplify all of the changes, we’ve detailed the latest North Shore Surf Competition schedule in chronological order at the top, and at the very bottom, you’ll find descriptions of the Pre-Covid classic events (so you know the history in case you’re interested; also, some events might make a return!).

If you have any questions, feel free to leave us a comment at the bottom of the article and we’ll do our best to help!

The Lowdown on Surf Competitions

In case you’re not familiar with the format of surf contests, here’s the lowdown. Since coordinators can’t predict what exact dates will have the best conditions for surf, there are holding periods or event windows in which a competition will take place.

For example, the holding period for the Billabong Pro Pipeline is January 29 – February 10. During the competition window, the weather and wave conditions are closely monitored, and every morning the contest officials make the call whether the contest is on or off.

If you’re visiting Oahu in a contest window, check out the website of the contest host or their social media every morning to see if the contest is on. For any World Surf League events, check out the World Surf League website, as they host quite a few of the top contests listed below and provide live updates on whether they are a go or not.

A Few Tips

  • Pack water and snacks for the day. Most competition sites have minimal food available, if at all.
  • Take your own shade. In the morning there can be some shade, but it’s very limited in most cases and the sun can still be plenty hot in Hawaiian winter.
  • If you bring an umbrella or other shade-giving contraption, do everyone a favor and keep it low or set up to the side so you’re not blocking anyone’s view.
  • Bring a camera (with a telephoto lens if you have it). It won’t do the waves justice, but you’ll have fun trying.
  • Take binoculars. You’ll be stoked to have them for places like Sunset Beach where the action is a few hundred yards offshore.

Sunset Pro

WHAT: World Surf League Men’s and Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) Event

WHERE: Sunset Beach, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: October 28 – November 6, 2023

The Sunset Pro has been on and off over the past several years and is now back for the 2023/2024 season. This event is part of the World Surf League’s (WSL’s) Qualifying Series also known as a QS event (the division that pro surfers have to compete on to ultimately make it to the WSL Championship Tour). While this contest doesn’t include the most famous surfers, it certainly still features some of the very best surfers in the world competing at Sunset Beach.

WHAT: WSL Men’s and Women’s Qualifying Series (QS) Event

WHERE: Hale’iwa Ali’i Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: November 26 – December 7, 2023

Formerly a part of the Vans Triple Crown, this Haleiwa event is now a part of the World Surf League’s (WSL’s) Qualifying Series.

Located to the west of the boat harbor in Haleʻiwa town, Haleʻiwa is a surf break with many faces and serves as a training ground for many up-and-coming Hawaiian surfers. From punchy waves when it’s under head-high to gnarly barrels and closeout bombs when it’s double overhead plus, Haleʻiwa is the ultimate high-performance surfing arena. If it’s going off at Hale’iwa you can count on seeing some unreal turns, epic barrels, and a variety of aerial maneuvers.

Since this is a QS event, don’t count on many surfers from the Championship Tour to be in the competition. That said, there are lots of super-talented surfers on the QS, and some top Championship Tour surfers might show up to compete to warm up for their upcoming season.

GOOD TO KNOW: When the main parking lot is full, parking can be tricky (and expensive if you get a ticket). If you’re parking on the main street make sure that your car is completely off the road and not obstructing any walkways. We’ve seen the parking police give multiple tickets for vehicles that were barely crossing the lines. Food isn’t readily available in the immediate area so pack a lunch if you plan to stay for a while (Pro Tip: plan on staying for a while).

The Vans Pipe Masters

December 8 – 20, 2023

WHAT: Invite-only event by Vans, featuring world-ren owned men and women surfers

WHERE: Banzai Pipeline, Ehukai Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: December 8 – 20, 2023

In 2022, The Vans Pipe Masters event debuted in the event window of Dec 8 – 20. The Vans Pipe Masters is a specialty invitational competition showcasing 60 men and women handpicked by Vans as some of the most exciting barrel riders and aerialists from around the world.

Competitors are rewarded for tube riding, aerials, and turns for the first time ever at Pipeline (whereas former competitions are all about the barrel). While this isn’t a WSL event, expect some of the very best barrel riders and surfers in the world.

(Pre-Covid, December 8 – 20 was formerly the event window for the Billabong Pipe Masters (which is a Championship Tour Event), but the Billabong Pipe Masters has now been shifted to January 29 – February 10 (more on that event and Pipeline below).)

Da Hui Backdoor Shootout

WHAT: Surf competition hosted by Da Hui

WHERE: Banzai Pipeline, Ehukai Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: January 4 – 16, 2024

The Da Hui Backdoor Shootout is an invitation-only North Shore surf competition that features some of the best Pipe surfers in Hawai’i. Held in memory of Duke Kahanamoku, this unique jersey-free competition features teams of four competing against each other in epic Pipeline conditions.

GOOD TO KNOW: The contest is held on the best 3 – 4 days of surf conditions. You can watch it live on Surfline and Spectrum Hawai’i Surf Channel 250 or HD 1250.

Pipe Pro

January 29 – February 10, 2024

WHAT: The first event of the 2024 WSL Championship Tour (Men’s & Women’s)

WHERE: Banzai Pipeline, Ehukai Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: January 29 – February 10, 2024

The Pipe Pro (formerly known as the Billabong Pipe Masters) is one of the most premiere and surf-star-studded surf competitions on the North Shore (and truly, the world). Held at the legendary Banzai Pipeline, the Billabong Pro Pipeline is the first event stop of the Championship Tour season and features the top surfers in the world.

(Historical FYI: Prior to Covid, this event was formerly held at the end of December and was the final event of the season. It was also the third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown.)

Banzai Pipeline is world-famous for a lot of reasons, but especially for its size, shape, power, perfection, proximity to shore, and mesmerizing beauty. The break is capable of producing 25- to 30-foot gaping barrels that explode onto a super shallow and craggy coral reef. This all goes down very close to shore, making the beach at Pipe the ultimate wave-watching platform.

GOOD TO KNOW: Banzai Pipeline breaks left. However, surfers often surf the right as well which is known as ‘Backdoor.’ Depending on which direction is barreling better, the best seats in the house are either slightly up the beach northeast of the main peak if Pipe is doing its thing, or slightly down the beach southwest of the main peak if Backdoor is working instead.

Hurley Pro Sunset Beach

Binoculars and a telephoto lens come in handy at Sunset Beach.

WHAT: The second event of the 2024 WSL Championship Tour (Men’s & Women’s)

WHERE: Sunset Beach, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: February 12 – 23, 2024

Sunset Beach is one of the most iconic and challenging waves on the North Shore – the lineup is a massive playing field, the waves can get ginormous, and the conditions can be treacherous and unruly. Sunset Beach is a recent addition to the Championship Tour schedule and is an awesome spot for the world’s best surfers to put on a show.

Surfing Sunset Beach is the ultimate proving ground as there are a variety of conditions to endure – with multiple peaks to navigate and a whole lot of water moving. The waves tend to be big, powerful, and just downright nasty at times, which is all part of the beauty and amazement of Sunset Beach.

You’ll watch in awe as the pros throw down freakish open-face carves and pull into dredging barrels. If it’s on and the waves are pumping, the Hurley Pro at Sunset Beach will be a surf competition that you’ll never forget.

GOOD TO KNOW: The action is a few hundred yards offshore, so bring your binoculars and a telephoto lens if you have ‘em! Also, there are a couple of food trucks in the area, including the Insta-famous Sunrise Shack coffee stand where you can get your fix of bullet coffee, tea, and papaya bowls.

The Eddie Big Wave Invitational

December 14, 2023 – March 12, 2024

YouTube video

WHAT: Invitation-Only Big Wave Surf Contest in memory of Eddie Aikau

WHERE: Waimea Bay, North Shore Oahu

EVENT WINDOW: December 14, 2023 – March 12, 2024

‘The Eddie’ is a big wave invitational surf contest named after Eddie Aikau. Eddie is a legendary North Shore lifeguard and surfer who was known to chase the biggest swells and charge the biggest waves. A well-known saying in the surf community is “Eddie would go” which refers to how the fearless waterman would commit to paddling into the biggest and gnarliest waves.

This big wave North Shore surf competition has been around for over 30 years but has only run a total of 10 times since 1984 because the waves need to be huge for the contest to run. The competition is held at Waimea Bay – a legendary and challenging big-wave spot with a lot of history.

The contest has a three-month window from December through February when everyone involved is keeping a close eye on the surf report in hopes of identifying a swell worthy of running the contest. They look for swells that will produce waves in the 30- to 40-foot range, and the contest will typically run if surf heights reach a consistent 20 feet (Hawaiian) between December 14 and March 12.

The opening ceremony to kick off the holding window is often held around the end of November or early December. The opening ceremony for this season will be held at Waimea Bay on December 8th, 2023.

GOOD TO KNOW: This event is a big deal with a lot of history surrounding it. It has only been given the green light to run 10 times since it began in 1984! If you’re lucky enough to be in Oahu when this contest is a go, this is a surf competition that you don’t want to miss. Waimea Bay is the ultimate North Shore surf competition amphitheater with viewpoints surrounding the action. Bring binoculars, pack a lunch, and enjoy the show.

Things to Do on the North Shore

In addition to having some of the best beaches and surf competitions on the planet, there are tons of other great things to do on the North Shore. Check out a few top activities below and visit our Oahu Guide for more awesome things to do in Oahu.

Where to Stay on the North Shore

north shore oahu vacation rentals

Thankfully, the North Shore has been successful in keeping mass development at bay and the result is a country-like island coastline. Because there isn’t an assortment of hotels in the area, a great option is staying at a vacation rental for the best value and experience.

For the closest access to the surf, we recommend staying between Hale’iwa and Sunset Beach. That said, another top area close to the action with many great vacation rentals is Turtle Bay. Turtle Bay has multiple condo developments and a resort set on two golf courses and is surrounded by over 850 acres of mostly undeveloped land and coastline.

The condos are independently owned so they’re all different, and perks include pool areas, walking distance to the beach, a fun user-friendly surf break nearby, and easy access to beautiful trails all around the property.

turtle bay resort oahu
Turtle Bay Resort sits on a small peninsula surrounded by the Pacific and beautiful coastline.

If you’re into big resort fare with all the amenities, Turtle Bay Resort is the place on the North Shore – though it’s good to know that you will typically get a lot more space staying at a vacation rental versus the resort. That said, Turtle Bay Resort will give you more amenities, so the best choice just depends on what you’re looking for.

We know the North Shore very well, so to help you find the perfect place to stay, we’ve rounded up a few of the best vacation rentals on the North Shore. Below are a few top properties at different price points that were hand-picked based on location, design, amenities, reviews, and proximity to surf breaks.

* Good to Know: There used to be many vacation rental options on Oahu, but due to some recent strict short-term rental laws, many short-term rentals are no longer available so there is low supply and high demand. Because many places will book out, we highly recommend booking your reservation as soon as possible for the best options.

Classic North Shore Surf Competitions

(… that have drastically changed format or have ended… for now)

The following events are a few North Shore surf competitions that were classics prior to Covid. After Covid, a whole lot of competitions and schedules changed and these events were no more. That said, some events have morphed into another name or competition, and there are rumors that some may return back on the scene. We’ll have to wait and see, but here’s the lowdown on a few of the legacy surf events on the North Shore.

Vans Triple Crown of Surfing

THE LATEST: When Covid hit in 2020, many surf competitions and events were canceled or changed, and the Vans Triple Crown was one of the largest casualties. In 2020, in lieu of holding in-person events, Vans ran the Triple Crown as a ‘digital competition series’ and they have since stated that it will remain in this format permanently moving forward. So what the heck is a digital surf competition?

Basically, the contest is based on video submissions. During the event period of December 21 through January 21, competitors must surf across the three breaks of Haleiwa, Sunset, and Pipeline/Backdoor and submit video clips of their two best waves per location. WSL judges review the submitted wave clips and score competitors’ waves, and the competitors with the highest scores win. The winners will be announced at the official Awards Ceremony on January 23.

Needless to say, this new contest format all goes down online, and the exciting in-person events have ended for the foreseeable future. Fans can follow along with the new digital format and check out all submitted clips and leaderboards at the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing site.

Here’s how the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing used to run:

WHAT: A series of 4 different events. 1 qualifying contest and 3 main contests.

WHERE: Sunset Beach (twice) // Hale’iwa Ali’i Beach Park // Ehukai Beach Park Banzai Pipeline

(FORMER) EVENT WINDOW: November 13 – December 20 (the last in-person Vans Triple Crown was held in 2019)

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing (VTCS) is one of the most sought-after surf competition titles in the world for professional surfers, especially local North Shore Hawaiian surfers since the entire series of events takes place on their home turf.

The Vans Triple Crown is actually a combination of four events. The four events are the Vans Pro (formerly known as the HIC Pro) at Sunset Beach (a qualifying event), The Hawaiian Pro at Hale’iwa, The Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, and the Billabong Pipe Masters at the infamous Banzai Pipeline. We’ll cover each event in detail below.

The four contests take place over the course of seven weeks or so. Each event has its own window of opportunity to run (outlined below) and a single event will take three to four days to complete. The event coordinators do their best to choose the highest quality surf conditions within any given contest window. The winner of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is crowned champion after all event points are tallied up at the Billabong Pipe Masters.

Vans Pro // Event #1

HIC Pro at Sunset Beach

(FORMER) EVENT WINDOW: October 27 – November 9 (the last event was held in 2019)

WHAT: Qualifying event for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and World Surf League QS Contest

WHERE: Sunset Beach, North Shore Oahu

Since the early 80s, the Vans Pro (formerly known as the HIC Pro ) has been a platform for locals and surfers from around the globe to show off their skills and qualify for entry into the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Over 100 professional surfers compete for a spot in the world-renowned surf competition and it’s always an epic showdown of wave riding talent not to be missed.

Since the HIC Pro is a qualifying event as opposed to one of the main events, the competition typically draws fewer crowds, but the performance of these competitors is just as fierce as the main events.

Hawaiian Pro // Event #2

(FORMER) EVENT WINDOW: November 13 – 24 (the last event was held in 2019)

WHAT: First event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and World Surf League QS Contest

WHERE: Hale’iwa Ali’i Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

The Hawaiian Pro is officially the first event of the Vans Triple Crown and is held at Ali’i Beach Park to the west of the boat harbor in Haleʻiwa.

Vans World Cup of Surfing // Event #3

(FORMER) EVENT WINDOW: November 25  – December 7 (the last event was held in 2019)

WHAT: Third event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and World Surf League QS Contest

WHERE: Sunset Beach, North Shore Oahu

For the second competition of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, the crew heads back to Sunset Beach for the Vans World Cup of Surfing. By this event, all the pros are well warmed up from the previous two events and extra fired up to finish their last two events strong which makes for some exciting heats.

Billabong Pipe Masters // Event #4

north shore surf competition billabong pipe masters
Billabong Pipe Masters / Banzai Pipeline

(FORMER) EVENT WINDOW: December 8 – 20

WHAT: Prior to 2020, the Billabong Pipe Masters was the final event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and the final event stop of the WSL Championship Tour season.

WHERE: Banzai Pipeline, Ehukai Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

Pre-2020, the Billabong Pipe Masters was the third and final stop of the Vans Triple Crown and was also the final event of the season for the World Surf League Championship Tour. Unlike the other events tied to the Vans Triple Crown, the Billabong Pipe Masters event is still being held — just with a slightly different name and on different dates.

Currently, the Billabong Pipe Masters was re-named to the Billabong Pro Pipeline and will be held January 29 – February 10. This is now the first event to kick off the latest Championship Tour Season. You can get the lowdown in the event description here.

Volcom Pipe Pro

(FORMER) EVENT WINDOW: The Volcom Pipe Pro is not running in 2023, but the prior event window was January 29  – February 10 (this is an event that could return in the future)

WHAT: WSL Men’s Qualifying Series event sponsored by Volcom and Red Bull TV

WHERE: Banzai Pipeline, Ehukai Beach Park, North Shore Oahu

GOOD TO KNOW: While this isn’t a Championship Tour event, you’ll still find many of the world’s best and the majority of the top 34 pros taking advantage of the opportunity to surf perfect Pipeline with only a few other surfers in the lineup. You can expect all the same excitement and showmanship as you will find at the other Banzai Pipeline events. There are just a bit less hype and fewer crowds since it’s the beginning of a fresh new season of professional surfing.

    • Since coordinators can’t predict what exact dates will have the best conditions for surf, there are holding periods or event windows in which a competition will take place. So you’ll have to check closer to the event to know when they are thinking of running it. No tickets necessary, just bring some shade and a towel for hanging on the beach! Enjoy!

    • Hi Adriana — There are no surf competitions held in August. In the summertime, the ocean along the North Shore is very calm and there aren’t any waves. So while it’s the perfect time for swimming and snorkeling, there is rarely any surf in the summer months.

    • Hi, well the Billabong Pro Pipeline just ended last weekend on Feb 5th. The next competition window starts on Feb 11th with the Hurley Pro Sunset Beach. But from the looks of the surf forecast, they probably won’t kick off the comp until the 15th or 16th pending conditions.

        • My pleasure! The surf competitions can start as early as there is enough light to see the conditions and surfers. Every morning of the event window, the contest coordinators survey the conditions and make a call to whether to hold the contest or not (you can read more about it here).

Remember that the contests don’t run every day of the event window, so be sure to check if the event is called ON before you head over there. The Billabong Pipe Pro is run by the World Surf League, so visit their site here any morning within the event window you want to go, so you can confirm if the competition is happening or not. On the World Surf League site, you can also sign up for live event updates, or visit their social media accounts to keep in the know.

          Have a blast! Cheers

    • Hi Ned,

I feel your pain! Because it’s impossible to predict the exact dates the competitions will run within their designated event windows, it’s difficult to figure out travel dates if you have limited time and want to ensure some contest days (unless, of course, you can be in Oahu for the whole event window).

That said, I can confirm that there are set dates for a competition at Pipeline in December 2022. The competition is called the Vans Pipe Masters and its event window is December 8 – 20, 2022. This is a new event so the details and competitors haven’t been revealed yet, but it will be an Invitational, so I’m sure it will feature the best tube riders competing at Pipeline (really, any competition at Pipeline is going to feature some of the best barrel-riders on the planet 🙂 )!

If you can be in Oahu for the whole event window, then of course you’ll definitely be there for contest days. And if you have limited time, plan to arrive a few days into the event window and cross your fingers! Hope you score!

    • Hi John,

Yes, your dates are within the event windows for 2 events. The Haleiwa Challenger ran some heats already in November, but still has plenty more heats to run, so they will complete the competition anytime between now and December 7th (depending on conditions). And the window for the Pipe Pro is December 8 – 20, so they could possibly run the first day of the Pipe Pro during your trip on December 8th if you’re lucky!

      Have a great trip!

    • Hi Susie – The WSL has confirmed that the Pipe Masters will run December 8-20, 2021 to kick off the 2022 Championship Tour! But no official word on if the beach will be open to spectators yet. It will likely depend on what’s happening with Covid in December. Hopefully, the event will run as scheduled and the beach will be open to spectators. Fingers crossed!

  15. We booked a trip from Texas for the entire two weeks for the competition. Please tell me if there will be anywhere we can watch on the beach. I did not book two weeks to sit in hotel and watch surfing. Super bummed!!

    • Hey Todd – I feel your pain… such a bummer! Since these COVID-19 policies are all new, we really don’t know how the whole process will go down and have been waiting to get more info. The bad news is that to comply with safety/health regulations, the WSL is discouraging spectators and won’t allow people to congregate on the sand. The good news is that they are allowing people to traverse the beach so you could see some action that way, but then if there are lots of people walking back and forth along the beach, I don’t know how long they are going to let that fly. There might be a place you can sit and watch down the beach a ways, but again, if there are large groups of people congregating then they might put an end to that. I hope you’re able to figure something out so you can at least see some of the competition. I’d suggest bringing a pair of binoculars at the very least in case you can find a spot nearby to post up at. Good luck and hope you have a great trip despite the competition bummer!

  16. Hello, I’m wondering if wsl will allow public on the beach to watch the pipe master this year? Do you have an info? Thanks

    Reply
    • Hi Quentin – Good question. Unfortunately, due to COVID, it sounds like the WSL and local authorities won’t be allowing any spectators on the beach for the competitions this year. The WSL announced for the 2020/2021 season, their contests will be “broadcast-only” and have “limited or no on-site fans.” We’re assuming these measures will stay in place until health officials deem it safe for larger groups/audiences to gather.

    Reply
    • Hi Sheila – Yes, there’s a very good chance there will be surf competition days during November 19 – 30, but it all depends on the surf conditions. Your dates overlap with the holding periods for two competitions: the Hawaiian Pro, November 13 – 24, and the Vans World Cup of Surfing which is November 25 – December 7. Check out the WSL website every morning of the contest period and they will make the call whether the competitions are on or not. Hope you score some great competition days 🙂

    • I was fortunate, I went on vacation to Oahu with no place I had to be so I spent 3 and a half years, from 81 to 84. I’m left handed and I’m sure the reason I went left to the north shore. The only road that went all 112 miles around the island. No freeways at that time. So I stopped at Waimea and thought man this was the place for me and I fit right in. Then I stopped at the Pipeline. It was January and I had just come from 18 inches of snow on the ground in Denver. So I took a personal tour of the famous surf spots. On my tour I found a house right at Sunset beach for rent. So I grabbed the number rented the house then finished my tour of the Atoll. Anyway I hadn’t thought about Hawaii until I was talking to my girlfriend then my appreciation for being there and how fortunate I really was. Anyway we are coming for 3 of weeks in late November and early December and I won’t be a tourist. I don’t surf but I boogey board and will again. We are doing Air B and B on Sunset Beach and I can keep us busy while we’re there.
Hope I didn’t run to long. I love Oahu and probably could live there again except for the density . But now I’m ready to come back.

    • Hi Kimberley – Yes, you’re able to easily see the surfing from the beach, and Pipeline is the closest, so you’ll have an especially good view there. November to January are the best times to catch surf competitions in Oahu – you can check out all the dates in this article above. All of the competitions are awesome, but the Billabong Pipe Masters is one of the ultimate surf competitions on the planet so if those dates work for you, go for the Pipe Masters 🙂 Cheers

    • Hi Susan – The Pipe Masters is definitely running this December 8 – 20, 2019, and the WSL also secured permits for 2020 and 2021 as well. In 2018 there were some issues with permits and news stories about the WSL not returning to Hawaii because of permitting issues, but they were all resolved and the WSL events will carry on as normal. At least for the next few years!

  30. I just wanted to remind all who are visiting during a contest window that surfing events are shown live and taped on local cable channels, so if you are in Waikiki and want to know what days the contest s will be on, just turn on your tv! I got to watch Volcom Pro footage and they let me know how conditions were expected for the next day. This is the best way to know if the contest will be on if you don’t access the event’s website.

Question Please… 2 years ago I got there and didn’t realize I had just missed a Comp by 2 days. I was there the entire month of December. How do you go about getting tickets for the Billabong Event? Cost etc. Mahalo in advance

    • Aloha Marcy- Yes, the North Shore is such a wonderful spot! The window for the Pipe Masters this year is December 8 – December 20, 2019. There aren’t set dates within that time frame, as the contest will run depending on the wave conditions. See the section above regarding the “lowdown on surf competitions” for more info on that.

And I’m happy to report that there’s no such thing as tickets for surf events as they are completely free to all! Just pack up your beach gear, find a spot on the beach, and you can watch the competitions to your heart’s desire 🙂

I am wondering for the Billabong Pipe Master World Surfing Competition is going to hold on 12/8/19-12/20/19 for sure? Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Thank you!

    Reply
    • Aloha! Yes, that is the definite window for the event to be held. Just keep in mind the actual days that the contest runs depends on the swell/surf conditions. It usually takes 3-5 days to complete the event. So it could run on 12/8 through 12/12, or 12/16 through 12/20, or any other combination of days during that window depending on the conditions. So it could be that they run days 1 and 2 on the 8th and 9th, and then the swell dies for a week, and they finish days 3 and 4 on the 12th and 13th.
Hope that helps clear things up a bit.

However, if it doesn’t go when you’re out there you should definitely still go stop by Pipeline, Sunset Beach, and Waimea Bay to check out the local surf scene. There will likely be some amazing waves to see and only the best surfers are out if it’s big. Not to mention, the beaches are very beautiful too.

For the Eddie, it really depends on conditions… organizers are always watching the upcoming weather and swells, so sometimes there will be talk of the contest a week or so in advance. Depending on the confidence of the conditions, organizers typically will confirm the contest a day or so before they green light the contest day. • Hi Debby, The 2019 Volcom Pipe Pro will run between January 29 – February 10, 2019. Because surf competitions heavily depend on the surf conditions, organizers set a window for the contest to run and then choose the specific competition dates when they can see the forecast and determine which days are best to run the contest. I don’t know how long you’re planning to go, but we’d recommend planning your trip right in the middle of the contest window (Jan 29 – Feb 10) for the best chance at making sure the contest runs while you’re there. Have a great trip and happy travels!

    • Hi Suzanne,
You’re going at the best time for surf competitions! You will be in Oahu for the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach (the window runs 11/25 – 12/6), and if you’re lucky with the right surf conditions, you might be able to catch the Billabong Pipe Masters (the window runs 12/8 – 12/20). You can read all about the events and more details in this article.

The competitions are all amazing to see, but the Billabong Pipe Masters is definitely the most impressive because there’s potential for the biggest waves and the waves break really close to the beach so it puts the audience super close to the action.

For exact dates, your best bet is to check https://www.worldsurfleague.com/events/2018/mqs and keep an eye on the Volcom Pipe Pro once we’re within the window of the competition. As for surf lessons, you should check out Surf N Sea in Haleiwa (https://www.surfnsea.com/en/). They’ll take good care of you. Regarding transportation from Waikiki, I’d recommend contacting your hotel or host as they’ll be better equipped to provide you with the most accurate information on local transportation to the North Shore. • Hi Paul, the North Shore of Oahu is a very small mostly residential area. There is only one road, Kamehameha Highway (aka Kam Hwy), that goes along the coast where you’ll access all the different beaches and surf breaks including Pipeline. That being the case, there is not much for parking except in the main parking lot at Ehukai Beach Park and along Kam Hwy or in the residential neighborhoods. My advice is to get there if there is going to be a comp. Otherwise, park where you can and walk in. Best of luck!

    • Well, it depends on the swell and wind conditions. Generally, winds are lightest in the morning and get stronger during the day. If that’s the case, then around 6:30 – 11 am might be the best window. But that’s not always the case. On the North Shore, any light to moderate winds blowing from the east tends to provide the best conditions, and that can happen at any time of day.

Actually, turns out the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout window is Jan 4 – Jan 16. So they’ll look to run the contest on the best 3-4 days of surf conditions during that time frame. I glanced at the surf forecast and it looks like some pretty decent conditions might be available on Jan 4th, so it’s possible that they will run some heats that day! It will be best in the morning. Looks like that is your only chance to catch a surf comp. However, there will probably be some solid waves on the 2nd and 3rd too, so while there won’t be a contest going on, there will certainly be lots of pros in the lineup warming up for the comp which is always fun to watch. Enjoy!

  58. HI Eric, We will be in Oahu on Jan 23 with a cruise. Are there any Surfing competitions going on on Jan 23? Or should we be likely to see some gnarly surfers at Waimea Bay on that date?

    • Hi EJ! Good stuff, it’s possible that the Sunset Pro Junior could be going on. The window for the contest is from Jan 18 – 28, 2018, so, if the conditions are good enough on Jan 23 when you’re there, it’s possible that it could be on. If not, just watching free surfers anywhere on the North Shore is always a good time if the waves are solid. But I’d recommend checking out Banzai Pipeline because it’s one of the best places in the world to watch waves. Waimea is amazing too, but it has to be HUGE to break. A week before you go, check the surf forecast here to see how big and good it will be.

  59. My husband and I will be traveling to Oahu in 2018 during the Volcom Pipe Pro. Do the competitors ever do “meet-and- greets?” I know my husband would love an opportunity to meet some of the surfers and it would be a cool surprise for him as he will be celebrating a milestone birthday while we are there. Any info is greatly appreciated!

    • Hi Mary, good question, I’m not sure about that. But I just emailed Red Bull and I’ll let you know what I find out once I hear back! Cheers!

        • Hi Mary, well the verdict is that they don’t really ever organize meet and greets that would give you the chance to mix and mingle with the pros. However, sometimes sponsors will put on PR/marketing events that might involve the opportunity to meet that brand’s riders. You might want to just try swinging by the Volcom house and striking up a conversation with the crew. Good luck and have fun!

  60. I love love love watching surfing. I feel fairly informed about how the wsl tour works but I am still puzzled about who qualifies to enter the events tat make up the Triple Crown. Can you explain this for me?

    • Hi Christine, yeah, we could get carried away binge-watching a good surf competition for hours! The qualification process is not a perfect science and even seems a bit obscure, probably intended to leave the WSL and their partners some flexibility. My understanding is that the WSL Commissioner’s Office and the Event licensee select the surfers based on a detailed list of eligibility rules and guidelines. One criterion they have for Hawaiian QS events is that the event will include at least 16 local Hawaiian surfers. I’m sure there is a lot to it and the top-ranked surfers in the world have priority but it appears that a surfer can “qualify” to enter a Vans Triple Crown event simply by being a local ripper with a good reputation and a nomination from a trusted source. On that note, the competitive surf scene in Hawaii and throughout the world is a very tight-knit community. These guys and girls start early and know each other from a young age. So when it comes time to enter an event like the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, I’m sure the WSL and local Licensee already have their fair share of professional surfers to choose from. You can download the WSL Rulebook from their website and read more about their selections process under Article 45. Hope this helps!
