Memmo Baleeira

Bright and minimal ocean view hotel in the Algarve on Portugal’s southwestern tip.

This is one memo you don’t want to miss, sorry, had to. Memmo Baleeira in Portugal’s Algarve is a minimalist’s dream hotel featuring clean lines, light tones, and 180 degree ocean views. Situated on the most southwestern tip of Portugal, Memmo Baleeria is an idyllic getaway for active families, design enthusiasts, and budding and pro surfers alike.

30 minutes west of Lagos, the modern hotel sits above the small fishing town of Sagres within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park that’s home to expansive beaches, dramatic cliffs that plunge into the ocean, and rocky coastline stretching as far as the eye can see.

Sagres is a treasured surf destination in the Algarve, as there are many nearby breaks to be explored on this stunning rugged coast. Novices can get surf lessons from the onsite surf school led by experienced coaches, while seasoned surfers can access the famed breaks of the region with a short drive.

A bucket list destination for outdoor lovers, surfing is just one of the many activities to take part in. Hiking, diving, boating, and yoga are all available to make the most of your trip to Portugal’s south end.

Features

Inside

The rooms and communal spaces here are clean, minimal, and bright. Blonde woods and white walls accompany each room from the doubles to the two-bedroom suites (perfect for families). Choose from countryside views, partial sea views, or sea views for the best seats in the house.

Outside

Lounge by the pool overlooking the ocean, relax on the grass after a day in the water, or stay on the sand through sunset – the choice is yours. Sagres is surrounded by the sea, so no matter where you look or where you go, know the views will be stunning and the water will be close.

Eat & Drink

Find Mediterranean fare and refreshing drinks at the onsite restaurant, Fornaria, as well as the rooftop lounge. Ingredients are locally sourced and dishes are prepared using classic coastal methods – woodfired pizza and grilled octopus are just a couple of the menu mainstays.

The Surf

The Algarve’s position on the corner of the Iberian Peninsula blesses it with the widest swell window in Portugal and frequent offshores on the south coast. There’s a wide range of reef and beach breaks, and the vast unspoiled coast give you the potential for uncrowded waves. Waves can be found year round in the region, but the summer can bring some flat spells. While May to July is typically the least favorable time for more advanced surfers, if you’re just learning to surf, summer is a great time to visit, as the waves are small, and the weather and water are warmest.

Location

Memmo Baleeira is located in the small coastal village of Sagres in the Algarve region of southwest Portugal, about a 30-minute drive from Lagos. The Algarve is known for its stunning coastline, picturesque countryside, and beautiful beaches. The area is also known for having good consistent surf, as this region has one of the widest swell windows in Europe.

Getting There

The closest airport is Faro International Airport (FAO) in Faro on Portugal’s southern coast. From Faro, the drive to Memmo Baleeira is about an hour and a half. Flying into Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS) in Portugal’s capital of Lisbon is also an option, but the drive to the hotel is three hours and there are more tolls to pay along this route. We highly recommend renting a car, as it’s the best way to explore the stunning coast and countryside in the Algarve.
