Costa Rica is a paradise for surfers, with an abundance of wonderful surf towns offering unique experiences and really fun waves. From the golden sands of Playa Avellanas to the holistic vibe of Nosara, Costa Rica’s surf towns are nothing short of spectacular. It’s no wonder that this country has become a top destination for surfers from around the globe.
We have spent a lot of time in Costa Rica and have experienced some fantastic areas, and some not-so fantastic areas. Like any place on the planet, surf towns in Costa Rica are not created equal. Of course, it really all depends on your personal preferences and what you’re looking for on your trip. If you’re into highly touristed and developed areas with main streets lined with bars and a party vibe, this list is not for you.
These Costa Rica surf towns are chosen based on my personal preferences and what I love on a surf trip: great waves, a more off-the-beaten-path feel (low development), mellow vibes, family-friendly, wonderful restaurants, and beautiful places to stay. I’m into surf destinations surrounded by nature that attract those looking for an experience filled with surf/wellness/yoga/nature. These are not the places that attract a partying/spring break/backpacker crowd — no offense, it’s just not my jam. If that all aligns with what you’re looking for then this list is for you.
In this guide, we’ll explore the best surf towns in Costa Rica, highlighting the top surf spots and what makes each destination special. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a beginner looking to catch your first waves, here are three amazing Costa Rica surf towns for an unforgettable Pura Vida adventure.

The Best Surf Towns in Costa Rica
Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra
Located in the Guanacaste region on the Pacific Coast of Northern Costa Rica, Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra are dream destinations for surfers looking for a laidback surf trip that feels off-the-beaten-path, yet conveniently located near the international airport and the conveniences of a larger town (with larger grocery stores, surf shops, etc).
With beautiful uncrowded beaches, clear waters, and an abundance of fun surf breaks for every level, these tiny beach communities offer a serene escape from the hustle and bustle.
This area is one of our favorite places in Costa Rica, so we’ve spent a lot of time here over the years and know the area quite well. We also have our 7-night Costa Rica surf retreat based at an amazing luxury oceanfront villa at Playa Negra. If you’re looking for a mellow Costa Rican getaway with fun surf and great restaurants, the towns of Playa Avellanas and Playa Negra are a beautiful slice of surf paradise.
Top Surf Spots in Playa Avellanas & Playa Negra
Little Hawaii: Located at the north end of Playa Avellanas. This mini point break has a rocky reef underneath and offers large, fast waves. It’s mostly a right with some quick lefts, best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers.
El Estero (The Rivermouth): This fun A-frame wave is found about halfway down the beach at the river mouth. It offers rippable lefts and rights with the potential for barrels, recommended for intermediate to advanced surfers.
The Beach Breaks: Located at the south end of Avellanas, these beach breaks provide user-friendly peaks, especially at higher tides. This area is popular with surf schools and offers some of the best conditions for beginners.
Playa Negra: A powerful barreling wave framed by a rocky reef. Ideal for advanced surfers on bigger days and more manageable for intermediate surfers during smaller swells and high tides.

Renowned for its consistent user-friendly waves, pristine beaches, lush tropical landscapes, and vibrant community spirit, Nosara beckons travelers seeking a harmonious blend of relaxation and adventure.
This charming surf town is one of the best in Costa Rica. Beyond the fun waves and friendly vibes, Nosara also boasts a thriving wellness scene with yoga studios and holistic retreats dotting the landscape. Top Surf Spots in Nosara
Playa Guiones: This main attraction offers a 7km stretch of sandy beach break, providing consistent, year-round surf for all levels. Beginners and intermediates will enjoy the mellow rollers, while advanced surfers can find rippable peaks. Also, the friendly vibe and ample space make it a favorite among locals and visitors.
Playa Ostional: Known for its wildlife and challenging waves, this spot offers punchy, fast waves breaking over a sand-bottom mixed with rocks. Best suited for advanced surfers due to strong currents and less forgiving conditions. Playa Ostional also provides a unique experience with its arribada of sea turtles.
Playa Nosara: This river mouth break offers fun, playful waves when the conditions align. A great option for those seeking fewer crowds, the waves here vary with the tides. The surrounding natural beauty and wildlife add to the allure of this spot.
Playa Garza: A hidden gem south of Guiones, Garza offers a mix of reef and beach breaks catering to different levels of surfers. While less consistent than Guiones, it provides excellent waves with fewer surfers when the conditions are right. Ideal for those looking to explore off the beaten path.
Playa Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a small, laid-back surf town located on the southern Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. Once a quaint fishing community, it has grown into a buzzing surf and yoga destination over the past 15 years, attracting surfers and travelers from around the globe.
Drawn by the waves, sunshine, and Pura Vida lifestyle, many visitors have decided to stay, adding to the town’s vibrant international feel. The influx of expats and travelers has led to an abundance of great restaurants, villas, and boutique hotels, all while maintaining the town’s charming character.
The area boasts consistent waves year-round, making it a favorite destination for surfers of all levels. The long stretches of white sand beaches, surrounded by lush jungle and framed by the Pacific Ocean, create a serene backdrop for surf sessions and relaxation alike.
Top Surf Spots in Santa Teresa
Playa Santa Teresa: This prime surf spot features a long stretch of beachfront near the main road. The beach offers peaky breaks powered by dominant W and SW Pacific swells. Low tides can produce fast, thrilling hollow tubes, while beginners can enjoy crumbly whitewash on smaller days.
Playa Hermosa: Located just north of Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa has a wide sandy beach lined with beach breaks that are perfect for beginners and early intermediates. When Playa Santa Teresa gets too big, local surf schools head here. At the north end of the beach, there is a challenging right-hand point that is best surfed at high tide.
Mal Pais/Punta Barigona: This spot requires strong swells to work, however, when the conditions are right, it offers long, hollow waves with a fast section over the outside reefs. This break is best for experienced intermediates and more advanced surfers due to the rocks and rips.
From the playful waves of Playa Santa Teresa to the tranquil shores of Nosara, each of these surf towns offers a unique slice of surfing paradise. As you explore these coastal gems, you’ll encounter not only world-class surf spots but also a warm, welcoming culture and stunning natural beauty. Whether you’re in search of the perfect wave or a serene family getaway (or both!), these Costa Rica surf towns promise an unforgettable surf trip.
