Nosara, Costa Rica

The Surf in Nosara

surf in nosara

Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula enjoys consistent surf all year long and serves up a plentiful selection of quality waves. Beach breaks are the main offering in the Nosara area, with the local sand bars providing both barrels and user-friendly walls.

November to March is the season for smaller waves, with waves usually from knee to chest high. April through October is the south swell season which delivers larger waves that can vary from chest-high to overhead. That said, Nosara is a great surf destination for all surf levels at every time of year.

Surf Breaks

Playa Guiones surf break
Playa Guiones

Playa Guiones

Playa Guiones is the main attraction of Nosara’s surf scene, boasting a 7km stretch of sandy beach break that caters to surfers of all levels. Known for its consistent, year-round surf, you’ll find waves here that offer something for everyone – from mellow user-friendly rollers perfect for beginners and intermediates to more rippable peaks for advanced surfers. The vibe in the water is friendly and inviting, and with a long beach and plenty of peaks to spread out the crowds, you should have no problem getting your fair share of waves. The best tides for surfing are typically between mid and high tide.

Playa Ostional

Just a short drive north of Guiones, Playa Ostional is known for its wildlife as much as its waves. This spot is home to the arribada, where thousands of sea turtles come ashore to nest. But surfers flock here too for the punchy, fast, and often challenging waves that break over a sand-bottom mixed with rocks. It’s a spot better suited to more advanced surfers, as the currents can be stronger and the waves less forgiving. However, if you’re comfortable in more challenging conditions it could be a fun option with less crowded line-ups and the chance to surf amidst one of nature’s most incredible phenomena.

Playa Nosara

Playa Nosara can offer a more laid-back alternative to the hustle of the main breaks. Here, the river mouth meets the ocean, creating a unique break that can offer up some fun, playful waves when the elements align. It could be a good option for those looking to seek out fewer people in the lineup. The waves here can vary a lot with the tides, so it’s a good idea to check it at different times of the day. The surrounding area is beautiful, with plenty of opportunities for spotting wildlife on the way to and from the break.

Playa Garza

South of Guiones, Garza is a hidden gem that feels like stepping back in time to when surfing was a quieter pursuit. This fishing village offers a mix of reef and beach breaks that can cater to different levels of surfers, depending on the swell and tide. The waves here are less consistent than at Guiones, but when it’s on, Garza can offer up some excellent waves with the chance of fewer surfers in the water. It’s a cool spot to check out for those looking for a little more adventure and willing to explore a bit off the beaten path.

Language: Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas like Nosara. Visitors will find that most locals can communicate effectively in English.

Drinking Water: While tap water in Costa Rica is generally safe to drink in Guancaste, it’s recommended for visitors to stick with filtered water to avoid any potential stomach issues. Many accommodations provide filtered water for guests or have water filtration systems.

Power Outlets: The voltage and power outlets in Costa Rica are the same as in the United States – 120 volts, and type A and B outlets. US travelers will not typically need a power adapter. If you’re traveling from Europe, Australia, or Asia, you will need a power adaptor for your plugs.

Travel Tips & Good to Know

  • There is a delicious ice-cream sandwich made in Costa Rica called ‘Trits’ (pronounced treats). They. Are. Scrumptious. And you should probably try one. You can find Trits at most grocery stores.
  • Nosara embraces a laid-back lifestyle, so pack casual and bring lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and insect repellent. See our Costa Rica Packing List for a detailed list.
  • Most restaurants and services accept credit cards and US dollars. It’s a good idea to have some cash on hand for tipping or in case you need it, however, if you’re traveling from the US, there’s no need to exchange for Colones (the local currency) before your trip, as the majority of places accept US dollars.
  • Many businesses and people in Costa Rica communicate through WhatsApp. If you don’t have the WhatsApp app on your phone, we recommend downloading the app and setting up your profile before your trip. It’s easy, fast, and free.
  • If you plan on using mobile service during your trip, we highly recommend looking into your cell service provider and adding a package for international service for the length of your stay to avoid any unexpected/unpleasant mobile phone charges.
  • “Pura Vida” is more than just a phrase in Costa Rica; it’s a way of life, a philosophy deeply ingrained in the culture and mindset of the people. Translating to “pure life” or “simple life,” Pura Vida encapsulates the idea of living life to the fullest, appreciating the beauty of simplicity, and finding joy in every moment.

Security Recommendations

Costa Rica is generally a very safe country for travel, however, petty theft does happen, so don’t leave personal items unattended anywhere, and always be aware of your surroundings.

  • Do not leave valuables unattended on the beach or in an unattended vehicle.
  • Your accommodations are likely very secure, however, when you leave your room or villa, it’s good practice to always close and lock up all doors and windows.
  • We recommend not leaving anything outside on your patio when unattended, and keeping valuables out of clear sight. Hide important items or lock them securely in a safe.
